Dipper Missing (Civil War Trompe L'oeil)
This trompe l'oeil painting of various Civil War supplies hanging from a door was completed by Boston artist Darius Cobb in 1888. By the 1880s, nostalgia and patriotism for the Civil War was growing, and printing firms marketed lithographs of still-lifes, like this one, to war veterans and their families.
This print features a rusted canteen, a Union hat and a knapsack hanging from a cream/white door. At the bottom is a note pinned on the door that reads "dipper missing" with a sketch of a tin cup.
