Kit Carson

Painted in 1867 by artist Henry H. Cross, this artwork depicts frontiersman Christopher "Kit" Houston Carson, and an unidentified Native American man.

Born in 1809 in Kentucky, Kit Carson is known for opening up the American West, and for playing a significant role in guiding Army troops from San Diego through the California desert to reinforce General Stephen Kearney and his men who were pinned down by Mexican soldiers during the Mexican-American War in 1846.
