Washington Crossing the Delaware

Painted in 1851 by German artist Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze, Washington Crossing the Delaware depicts General George Washington and soldiers of the Continental Army navigating the frozen river on their way to victory at the Battle of Trenton during the American Revolution.

According to Alan Michelson of the Mohawk tribe, "The boatman pictured in the stern wears Native moccasins, leggings, and a shoulder pouch, and most likely represents an Indigenous member of Washington's troops."
