Conrad Wise Chapman, a soldier in the Confederate Army who began serving in the war at the age of 19, created detailed sketches of Fort Sumter after it had been pummeled by artillery during the first engagement of the Civil War. In 1864, his father, John Gadsby Chapman, used Conrad's drawings to craft the painting.
