Howard Pyle's painting depicts the outbreak of armed conflict between the British and the thirteen colonies. Fought on April 19, 1775 in Middlesex County in the Province of Massachusetts Bay within the towns of Lexington, Concord, Lincoln, Cambridge, and Menotomy (present-day Arlington), the Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the American Revolution.
Originally printed in Scribner's Magazine in January 1898, alongside Henry Cabot Lodge's text for "The Story of the Revolution", the image conveys the heroism of the fighting and wounded militiamen.
